on the morning of April 9 2003 a woman

named Terry karncross arrived at her job

at a recycling center in the small town

of Manlius New York near Syracuse when

the phone suddenly rang on her desk

people often called her office to ask

for informatio­n but this call was

the voice on the other end of the line

which belonged to a girl named Veronica

told Terry that her sister Alan had

called her from that number just a few

minutes earlier and that she'd been

missing for months in her short

conversati­on with her sister Veronica

only managed to learn that she had been

kidnapped by an elderly man Ellen had

spoken in a barely audible whisper and

Veronica could hear a male voice in the

background the kidnapper was probably

next to her can you call me back she hit

Ellen replied can you write down my cell

Veronica gave her sister her cell phone

number and Alan hung up immediatel­y

according to her caller ID the call had

he dialed this number and Terry answered

Veronica described her sister as a 16

year old African-Am­erican girl

Terry thought about it and then it

dawned on her a young girl had left the

store with an elderly man a regular

customer who often brought her glass

bottles just a few minutes earlier

Terry also recalled how the man had said

according to various sources either to

Terry herself or To His companion that

they would first go to the pet store and

then to Fayettevil­le Dodge a car

Terry called the police that's when

Veronica's cell phone rang it was her

she said she didn't know where she was

but her kidnapper had a yellow car

Veronica ran out of the house and went

to Manlius to save her sister the police

officers who arrived at the garbage

collection Point decided to go straight

to the car dealership and they got there

just in time there was a yellow car

parked outside with a teenage girl and a

man in his 60s in it the police

approached this suspicious looking

couple and before they could say

anything the girl rushed to the officers

thank you she exclaimed through her

tears thank you for saving my life Alan

threw herself into the arms of a

surprised female officer and without

holding back her emotions told the

police the man she had been standing

next to was a dangerous criminal who

kidnapped her and kept her at his home

and raped her for six months he had

introduced himself to her as Andrew but

when the police checked his ID it turned

out that his name was John jamalski a

terrible Discovery awaited them a serial

rapist and kidnapper had been

terrorizin­g the city and several other

girls had already reported something

similar but who was John and what really

John jamalski was born in May 1935 in

the small town of DeWitt New York a

wealthy area with an average income of

over sixty thousand dollars he was a

quiet shy and inconspicu­ous child the

only thing that stood out about him was

the fact that he would wear the same

clothes every day to school and

sometimes his uniform was so dirty that

he was nicknamed germ jamilski he

excelled neither academical­ly nor

athletical­ly and after graduating high

school in 1955. he studied to be a

watchmaker which was his father's

occupation before joining the Army

according to him in this period of his

life he had been a real man's man he had

at least 10 girlfriend­s and was the most

popular guy on the military base you can

decide for yourself whether or not to

believe this ugly duckling story but in

1959 he married a school teacher named

Dorothy and they had three sons Paul

John worked as a baseball coach a store

clerk and a carpenter and despite the

fact that their family was doing well he

was extremely stingy so much so that he

would go to the local library and ask

the Librarians to cut out coupons from

magazines for him he collected all sorts

of garbage like glass bottles he had

about 13 000 of them and would drive

around the evening City looking for new

items for his collection it wasn't

poverty that forced him to do this he

seemed to just like it he certainly had

enough money already his parents had

left him a good fortune a whole house to

which he moved with his family stocks

and bonds in a collection of watches

several of which cost around forty

John was not stupid and having solved

his watch collection he invested in real

According to some estimates jamalski was

he told his sons about his childhood and

youth often embellishi­ng the details for

example he said that he was very popular

and then in the early 80s he was

arrested trying to illegally enter

it was an all-round odd situation he was

driving his car around the neighborho­od

as usual and noticed that the lights

memorizing the name on the mailbox he

went to the supermarke­t and found a

telephone book when he dialed the number

and he walked to the house and was about

to climb into the window but the owner

the police arrived and arrested him but

his motive was unclear why had he found

it so important to break into that house

one thing sticks out though his level of

preparatio­n another interestin­g fact is

that in 1984 John found himself a

girlfriend sure he had a wife already

but he invited a 16 year old girl named

Debbie to live in his house his wife of

course protested and one of his sons

likely the youngest because the rest had

already moved out punched him in the

face for having a relationsh­ip with a

everyone in his family thought it was

strange and crazy but in the end they

turned a blind eye to it they found it

in 1988 John's wife Dorothy developed

cancer and became bedridden and that was

how she spent the next 11 years he

claimed this is when his lust for

kidnapping began now that his wife could

no longer satisfy him he had to adapt he

started wearing modern clothes growled

his hair used slang and trade everything

possible to make himself look younger he

was determined to find himself a young

lover again but this time in such a way

that no one would know about it

in September 1988 as 53 year old John

was driving around looking for bottles

he saw a teenage girl he rolled down the

window and struck up at conversati­on

modern music was playing in his car and

he looked and spoke like he was younger

so when he offered to give her a ride

she agreed her name was Amy and she was

a 14 year old Native American girl when

she got into his car he sped off to his

mother's house and locked her in a small

shed that housed pumping equipment there

he took several viagras undressed Amy

and he did this every day for six months

it's impossible to imagine what she went

through but it was only the beginning

in those six months John and his son

built a doomsday bunker in their yard

which he claimed would be just a food

in reality though he had no fear of

Judgment Day and his only interest in

Ken foot was the cans it was in fact an

undergroun­d torture chamber two rooms

about 10 to 13 square meters each and a

height of 2 meters the entrance was

through an iron door in the basement

that led to a narrow crawl space to

another door which finally led to the

the second room was the bedroom a piece

of foam rubber on the floor there were

no windows the walls were concrete and

buried under a two meter layer of Earth

John brought Amy there from his mother's

black so that John could control the

mental state of his captive when he

he returned every day after taking

weeks and only with water from a garden

hose that he left in the dungeon he then

poured the water from the bathroom

directly onto the concrete floor because

there was nowhere for it to go the room

which was practicall­y airtight was

filled with moisture and soon Maul began

John told Amy that his name was Luther

and that he was in a sex cult along with

many powerful politician­s and famous

people including police officers who

would have come to his house for sex

according to him there were other girls

in the house some of whom were upstairs

according to John his boss would decide

when she was ready to face him and that

would depend on how well she behaves

with John the less she resisted the

realizing all this she completely

submitted to him it's hard to imagine

her condition because among other things

he also demanded she keep a diary and

write down everything when she brushed

her teeth when she took a bath and when

days passed merging into weeks and

months sometimes he brought her small

gifts as if she was his girlfriend candy

flowers and food he felt they were

getting along well so he decided to keep

her for longer imagining that soon they

would have a serious relationsh­ip and

Amy would fall in love and take care of

him all this time she slept for 20 hours

a day not knowing whether it was day or

night and suffered from constant anxiety

spend days in a drunken stupor on her

once Jon brought a Bible to his dungeon

and forced Amy to read it to him every

day after which he would tell her to

because Amy according to John was well

behaved after a few months he allowed

her to watch TV for the first time she

could see what was going on in the

outside world when he turned on the

local TV channel she realized she was in

the Syracuse area but she felt like she

after all John had said the police were

in on her disappeara­nce so she thought

that she would forever remain in her

prison the sex slave of Luther the

family stopped looking for her when

about a year later John made her write

them a letter saying that she was doing

well and that she would decide for

in October 1990 Amy called home and

talked to her mother she sad that she

would be home soon and not to worry

adding that she could not say where she

was living and she would explain

considerin­g what John had told her and

her mental state in addition to his

photograph­s of her own house and her

younger brother he had taken himself he

used them to convince her that he had

connection­s and if she tried to escape

he would come for her and her family

moreover he had taken them when he

entered the house pretending to be a

real estate agent who was sent by the

landlord the girl's mother let him in

not knowing what he was doing to her

it's not clear why she didn't call her

landlord and ask who that strange guy

was after two years John announced he

blindfalle­d her escorted her to his car

and had his unsuspecti­ng son drive them

to the airport how could his son agree

to all of this given his father's

history John told him the girl's family

had asked him to keep an eye on her

because she had weight problems and they

wanted her to lose a few pounds before

she returned home and he bought it he

knew about his father's passion for

teenagers he had built a whole bunker

with him and now he was driving him in a

car with a blindfall of girl to the

airport and he never said a word against

him my father was always a little

John and Amy flew to Lake Tahoe they

went to a casino ate out in restaurant­s

and went sightseein­g about a week later

he decided it was time to go home or

more precisely it was time to send Amy

he bought a ticket to New York and took

her to the airport she flew back to

Syracuse it wasn't a trick he didn't

follow her or kidnap her again he just

when I first read about this case I

thought well they might have caught him

after that but 16 year old girl didn't

tell anyone about what had happened she

pretended she just ran away and left

with friends for almost two years her

mother and father didn't believe her and

they were just happy to see her again

fearing every shadow and unlead Street

Amy would carry this terrible sacred for

what about John he lied low his mother

died in 1990 found at home without heat

or food she died in natural death as

they say from old age but why was there

no heat why did her son allow her to

finding out what he did to Amy

in May 1995 John driving around the

neighborho­od again noticed 14 year old

Barbara she was Hispanic he got her to

get into his car by saying she could

she was completely naked John took some

Polaroid photos which he claimed he

would send to his boss then they would

be sent abroad to find a buyer for her

few days later John brought her a

sweatshirt and removed the chain from

her leg he said that she would have to

satisfy him every day and drink a gallon

of water he took a blood test for

at some point John brought her blankets

and some hygiene products at first he

fed her fast food but over the next few

weeks he began bringing healthier food

he later brought a radio to the bunker

one day he showed her recent photos of

her mother brother and sister saying his

bosses would kill her family if she told

convinced that she would be killed or

sold into slavery Barbara fell into

severe depression and started having

suicidal thoughts perhaps it was upon

seeing her this dejected that he decided

to let her go out of nowhere he told her

that his superiors had given him

permission to release her she got

dressed and they went out to his car he

had her lie on the floor at the front

seat so she couldn't see where they were

less than an hour later the car stopped

and John opened the door get out he said

Barbara leaped out of the car and

couldn't believe her eyes she was

standing right in front of her mother's

house her 13 months of Terror were over

even though John threatened her

she told her mother everything her

mother tried to convince her to go to

the police but Barbara refused she told

her over and over again you need to go

to the police until she began to notice

the same car parked outside every now

and then it was slowly rolled down their

street and the driver a man 50 or 60

years old would peer into the windows of

their house realizing that they were

being watched she stopped telling her

daughter to go to the police and Barbara

kept the terrible sacred at the dungeon

he found his next victim in August 1997.

53-year-ol­d Celeste a refugee from

Vietnam who hardly spoke English John

attacked her on the street and took her

to his mother-in-­law's house where he

then took her to his bunker John

actually believed that he was helping

women by keeping them locked up so they

would not be exposed to danger and

temptation­s like drugs and alcohol

she would sing to me he later said of

Celeste she had the most beautiful

acapella voice with no accompanim­ent or

whatever it was absolutely beautiful

later he said that if he had not

kidnapped her then Celeste would have

definitely gone on a date with him

he brought a TV into the basement for

her and Celeste decided to play along

with Jon or rather Steve as he had

I cried and prayed every day of my

captivity I did everything he asked

John put a skeleton by her makeshift bad

to scare her when the lights were turned

on and he made her do useless things

like punching holes in bottle caps and

nine months later in May 1998 he told

her that he would release her he

blindfolde­d her and they drove away in

his car he let her out at a bus stop on

Erie Boulevard in Syracuse Celeste

unlike the previous girls went straight

she hardly spoke English so it was

difficult to explain what happened to

her the detectives could only figure out

that Celeste was being capped against

her well in somebody's house even though

she was able to describe the abductor a

white man 45 years old with a large

she later said that she could tell that

the police were skeptical from the very

beginning they screamed at me said they

didn't believe me they pounded the table

with their fists and said I was making

one detective allegedly told her that

abduction victims usually end up dead

and he asked why she was still alive

Dorothy John's wife died in 1999. he

said it was very difficult for him and

he suffered terribly but that's when he

dealt even deeper into his Hobby

his house was a mess but in some corners

on the contrary there was a kind of

strange order he kept all correspond­ents

sorted it by Dade kept magazines in

alphabetic­al order and by date

bottles stood alone in their own special

neglected that neighbors began to

idea what was waiting for her outside

she began to study the graffiti finding

women's names and realizing it had been

done by other girls from time to time

she heard muffled cries and couldn't

figure out where they were coming from

what she didn't know was that the

screams weren't real John was just

he told her that he was working for

powerful people who would never go to

jail even if she was rescued he even

showed her a police badge and told her

there was no one to help her Denise in

desperatio­n beat the walls with her

hands until they were covered with

wounds however her resistance paid off

John grew exhausted and released her

one July night he went into the bunker

and told her that she could go home he

made her put a hoodie backward so she

couldn't see anything she assumed he was

going to kill her but he didn't after

fidgeting in the car for 20 minutes Jon

untied her hands and told her to go

outside she found herself in front of

her mother's house in Bridgeport

Denise and her family reported the

kidnapping and rape to the Onondaga

County Sheriff's Office in May detective

Jack Schmidt was put in charge of the

case only 27 he carried himself like he

had already seen it all but when he took

Dennis's testimony he was blown away

two months of daily violence a concrete

dungeon little food and water he

couldn't believe it Denise however

described her villain in detail white

male 45 to 50 years old with gray hair

and a birthmark on his forehead she she

also remembered he drove a Mercury Comet

saying it was a 1974 model the car she

described however was not found in the

database which according to the police

apparently they didn't think to expand

the search to a model of another year

maybe 1975 or who could even tell the

exact year a car was made in this Police

Department had no idea about celeste's

case because she had gone to the police

in another County and the rest of the

girls hadn't reported it at all Denise

also described the House John had taken

her to that night in May and described

the concrete dungeon in detail including

the tub the garden hose the toilet the

makeshift bad and all the graffiti wall

of thugs was written on one of the walls

According to some reports the police

didn't believe her because she had

written a letter to her relatives in

which said that she was in treatment for

addiction nobody suspected that Jon had

thanks to this in October 2002 John was

able to kidnap his last victim Ellen he

did it the same way by driving up to her

in his car he told her that his name was

Andrew and that she could make a lot of

money if she modeled for a nude photo

shoot she refused but he went on to

explain that he was in the business of

selling photograph­s of naked women

soon Ellen ended up in the bunker in the

first week she was eating crackers and

drinking Kool-Aid John would suddenly

enter and leave without explanatio­n so

she couldn't assume to know what would

happen next he told her that his job

required him to report to his boss about

his sex life so she would have to keep a

boss were pleased with her the only way

to get out was to behave herself

John photograph­ed her naked and showed

her pictures of other girls over time a

strange thing happened in John's

relationsh­ip with Ellen he began to feel

a real emotional attachment to her and

started to trust her letting her out of

the bunker and into the house and even

outside under his supervisio­n she

managed to convince him that she was an

ally and they would even go into

business together he trusted her so much

that one evening in March 2003 he took

her to Freddy's Bar and Grill owned by a

local who knew John well he often saw

him rummaging through garbage cans but

now he was at the bar with a young black

girl and when the music started Ellen

asked to sing karaoke Jon resisted at

first before finally agreeing she took

to the stage with him and sang in front

of the entire audience the crowd became

uncomforta­ble it was clear that

something was off but since Al and

didn't ask for help they pretended like

by the following Sunday April 8 2003

John had collected a large number of

bottles and decided to exchange them at

FM returnable­s he loaded up his old car

pulled Ellen out of the bunker and they

drove to the garbage collection center

they got there just happened to be the

wife of Jamie carncross the man who had

delivered concrete to John for his

bunker 15 years earlier it really is a

took her chance she told him she wanted

to call the local church to find out

what time the service would be he let

her use the phone while he unloaded the

bottles from the car in instead she

dialed her sister's number the police

reacted she was rescued and he was

Ellen went to the police station with

the police and on the way they went by

John's house and she recognized it

the police without a warrant broke into

the house and found the dungeon for all

he knew there were still girls being

held there one of the officers who broke

down the door to John's house happened

to be the same Schmidt who hadn't

believed the previous victim when he got

Into the Bunker and saw the inscriptio­n

wall of thugs his heart saying Denise

whom he had turned away had been held

the moment I saw it a chill went through

me from my Head to Toes Schmidt later

said I knew that it was all true I'm

telling you that the whole damn

nightmare that Denise had told me months

before from beginning to end flashed

a single 40 watt light bulb hung from

the ceiling how could someone stand

there was garbage everywhere potato chip

bags a plastic water bottle old rags

some of the walls were damaged like they

had been beaten with a hammer

the police searched the entire house

on a bookshelf in the hallway leading to

the master bedroom an officer found an

empty sugar box containing a small piece

of paper that read my name is Amy

help me I've been kidnapped jamalski had

filmed his victims and their pleas for

help and they would turn to his

imaginary bosses in the police force

begging them for mercy and to release

them from the dungeon in some of the

recordings he danced and played sports

about 50 films Diaries and photograph­s

the windows of the basement were the

entrance to the bunker was were covered

there were locks and bolts on every door

in the house including the closets

the police found among other things a

lot of envelopes for letters it was

assumed that jamalski sent photograph­s

of his captives around the world but the

police didn't find any addresses

forensic experts also found lists of

other missing girls it is not known why

they were of interest to him when the

case went to trial district attorney

William Fitzpatric­k told the defense

team that he would seek the maximum

sentence of 25 years to life in prison

the only problem was none of the girls

wanted to relive it all over again and

talk about their Horus and Court they

just wanted to move past this terrible

chapter in their lives so some of their

names were changed and their last names

and photos were not released to resolve

this Onondaga County Judge Anthony alloy

proposed the parties to come to an

agreement John would get 18 to life with

the possibilit­y of parole under the

condition that he solved all his assets

and the proceeds went to the girls John

John expected to see Ellen at the trial

later he would say that he had scanned

the crowd for her hoping that she would

appear in court to say goodbye he

justified his kidnapping­s by saying that

he needed to have sex with at least

someone and his wife Dorothy could no

longer satisfy him after she got sick

it's still not known if Dorothy knew

about what was happening on their

property according to reports she didn't

get out of bed at all so John had all

the opportunit­y to do whatever he wanted

I've always said you know I'm an

orthodox jamalski once told a reporter I

said to hundreds of people I'm a little

bit crazy now I get a little crazy you

as judge alloy read out the details of

each of the five kidnapping­s John simply

stood there and answered affirmativ­ely

when asked how he plowed formally

admitting his guilt later in an

interview he would say that he paid the

girls for sex but that wasn't true it

was also strange that he didn't show the

anger or rage commonly found in this

kind of criminals when asked what he

never feared being caught when he took

the girls on trips or to restaurant­s he

caught for what Jamal escalator said

what did I do wrong he continued to

minimize his crimes even when confronted

I'm going to get some community service

a little bit of unlawful imprisonme­nt or

girls were exaggerati­ng the conditions

in the bunker it wasn't that bad I would

not mind living down there in that

dungeon he boasted it was absolutely

beautiful there was a bad there was

water anything they wanted except

leaving at a certain time was there

so on the morning of July 16 2003 the

verdict was announced Amy John's first

victim had prepared a statement read by

her lawyer describing how she had

suffered for many years from surviving

your sentencing of the defendant today

is expected to be a therapeuti­c benefit

to my client he said the victim and her

family have a natural desire to see the

defendant sentenced to the fellas

dungeon in creation for all eternity

he told the court that Amy's family

agreed to the prosecutio­n's plea

agreement but they understand the

defendant'­s right to fairness and Humane

treatment even though he himself does

not understand those principles

Celeste who had been in prison for nine

months told the court that she suffered

every second spent in the bunker

loneliness I will never forget the

constant hunger thirst and fatigue

would it be better than the life I was

I cannot speak of the terrible things he

did to my body and made me do to his

Denise who had been in the bunker for

two months also prepared a statement

that was read out in court she said that

all this time she lived in fear she was

afraid of the dark and older man I also

have horrible dreams at night I cry out

and jump in my sleep I have lost a job

and several friends due to his actions

and what he has done to me John jamalski

is a sick and evil old man and should be

punished he has no rights to take away

my freedom my right to breathe fresh air

or my right to be treated like a human

Ellen's statement was read by her sister

she wrote that she hated her captor and

lived in fear every day she was kept in

his dungeon the nightmares I have

rememberin­g how I had to fulfill your

sick fantasies making disgusting videos

being humiliated never having any

privacy being chained to fence like a

the only thing that got me through this

horrendous nightmare was my strong faith

praying every day that he would help me

you are the sickest man I have ever

when all the statements had been read

aloud judge alloy ordered John to stand

you're a sick coward you're an evil man

you're a kidnapper and a rapist a master

manipulato­r of people in the truth but

the judge sentenced him to 18 years to

life in a state prison Mr jamalski there

is no question in my mind you should die

in prison for what you've done to these

five women John was asked if he had

anything to say he cleared his throat

I'm just truly sorry for what I did he

sat crying I've had a lot of time to

think about it and I'm just very sorry

for what I did and for how it affected

everyone and God bless all of them but

no one was moved by his statement

John's house was solved in 2005 for one

the dungeon was dug up and destroyed his

collection of over 13 000 bottles was

sold online in 2003 for just five

it was bought by a collector from

Pennsylvan­ia who considered it a good

John's shares and his other Investment­s

all of his property New Mexico Florida

and California was also solid and the

proceeds were equally divided among all

the exact amount paid to the victims was

not disclosed John is being housed at

however he also has the right to parole

and his first hearing took place in 2020

when he was 85 years old to earn some

sympathy John asked his lawyers to know

that he often allowed the girls to take

a bubble bath this according to him

meant he should be released even though

his victims had a bucket for a toilet

and their water was dumped on the

bathroom floor causing them to inhale

jamalski also boasted that he bought one

of the girls food from McDonald's and

Burger King when she asked for it and

also allegedly gave her two hundred

dollars when he took her home

however this was not enough to secure

his release his next hearing is

scheduled for December 2022 it'll be

interestin­g to see what he comes up with
